Payton Obert was just 18 months old when a charity gave her a teddy bear during a hospital stay. She doesn’t remember the moment, but the kindness stuck with her family. At eight years old, Payton decided she wanted to give that feeling back to other kids, so she set up a lemonade stand in her neighborhood. That first stand in 2018 raised $768 for toys for hospitalized children. Small beginning, massive ripple effect.

Over the next few years, Payton’s Lemonade Stand grew into a full-fledged nonprofit. By 2021, it became a registered 501(c)3. In 2020, Payton’s Pals launched with eight stands raising $35,000 during the pandemic. By 2025, 100 stands across Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky raised $150,000 in just three hours. This year, the event expanded to West Virginia, Baltimore, and New Mexico, bringing in $170,000. Total raised to date: $5 million. The charity provides toys, food, clothing, books, and school supplies to children facing economic hardship or illness.

Payton’s story proves that you don’t need a huge platform or a famous name to make a real difference. One idea, one summer, one stand at a time, and now thousands of kids are better off because of it. What’s a small idea you’ve had that could turn into something bigger if you just started?
