Taylor Swift's "Patient Zero" Was Inspired by a Friend's Awkward Call From Her Ex's New Girlfriend

Taylor Swift has a habit of turning real conversations into songs, and her new single“Patient Zero”has one of the most relatable origin stories yet. During an interview with Capital FM, confirmed by Billboard through her spokesperson, Swift explained that the song came out of a hangout with friends where one of them revealed her ex’s new girlfriend had called her asking for guidance. The question was simple and a little painful: did you have the same experiences with him that I’m having?

According to Swift, the moment snowballed. Other friends in the group started sharing their own versions of the same story, and instead of writing from the new girlfriend’s perspective, Swift flipped it and wrote from the ex’s point of view. That choice is what gives the song its sharpest line:“But if you’re sick of him, I got you, I was patient zero.”
