Taylor Swift just dropped a surprise four-track addendum called“The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,”and its lead single is doing the exact opposite of what everyone expected.“Patient Zero”takes an ex and turns him into a full-blown illness, complete with toxins and betrayal, all wrapped in the glossy Max Martin and Shellback production that made“The Life of a Showgirl”such a hit.

The song arrives as one of Swift’s first releases since marrying Travis Kelce, which makes it a whole statement. The Encore’s“Cleveland!”is a sweet nod to Kelce’s hometown, so the happy-ending era is definitely still alive. But“Patient Zero”pulls from the wounded, haunted energy of“The Tortured Poets Department,”reminding everyone that contentment and a sharp pen can absolutely coexist.
