The off-Broadway revival of Spring Awakening is doing something bold with a musical that was already bold 20 years ago. Choreographer Celia Rowlson-Hall says her movement work is built around representing women and their bodies in an empowered way, and making sure female desire is strongly felt on stage. For a show about German teens navigating sex, academic pressure, abuse and suicide while the adults around them stay silent, that shift in perspective lands hard.
Director and Tony winner Danya Taymor went with an open call for casting, favoring unknown performers over established stars. Rowlson-Hall explained the payoff: when the audience doesn’t already have associations with a face, they get to project their own story onto it. Auditions featured pop and rock songs, with Olivia Rodrigo, Joni Mitchell and Brandi Carlile showing up again and again. Previews begin November 27, opening night is December 17, and the run is already extended through April 4, 2027. It’s also one of two Duncan Sheik productions staged this year, following the composer’s death in September at 56.
This revival is arriving at exactly the right moment, with teen mental health and honest conversations about sexuality still very much part of the cultural conversation. The original Broadway cast made Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff into household names, so there’s real history here. Who do you think this new cast will launch into stardom?
