Spike Lee’s night at Yankee Stadium was supposed to be all about baseball. He was there Wednesday, September 30, for Game 2 of the Yankees-Red Sox AL Wild Card Series, which the Yankees took 9-2, one night after attending Game 1 with his daughter Satchel. Instead, he ended up in viral footage after a fan at a stadium restaurant repeatedly asked him about Palestine, prompting Lee to shout,“Why’d you come over to me?”as people held him back from a potential physical altercation.
Lee hasn’t publicly addressed the incident, and his team has been contacted for comment. The moment is especially charged because this topic isn’t new for him. Earlier this year, Lee wore Palestinian flag colors to the NBA All-Star Game, then apologized to Israeli-born player Deni Avdija, saying his outfit represented his concern for Palestinian children and civilians and his belief in“human dignity for all humankind.”
The internet is already split, as always: some say no one should ambush a stranger at dinner, others say a public figure with public views should expect public questions. Either way, everyone seems to agree a ballgame makes for a weird backdrop to a political confrontation.
Where do you draw the line? Would you approach a celebrity about politics in public, or does everyone deserve to eat in peace?
