Steven Spielberg’s Amblin is developing a film about Sammy“The Bull”Gravano, the Gambino underboss whose 1992 testimony put John Gotti behind bars. Nick Pileggi, the screenwriter behind“Goodfellas”and“Casino,”has already completed the script, and Ed Burns is in talks to direct. If you grew up on mob movies, this is the news you’ve been waiting for.
Gravano’s story is almost too wild for fiction. He admitted to 19 mob murders, cooperated with the government, entered witness protection, and then ended up back in prison years later on drug charges out of Arizona. That’s three full movies in one life, and Hollywood has never given him the big-screen treatment.
Amblin has confirmed the project is in development but not yet in production, so we’re still in the speculation phase. That means casting debates are officially open. Who gets the lead role? And does Spielberg producing a gangster film feel like a career curveball to you? Let us know in the comments.
