Patrick Stewart died Wednesday at his Los Angeles home at 86, following a short battle with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. His wife, Sunny Ozell, was there caring for him, and tributes have been pouring in from every corner of Hollywood.

Saturday Night Live honored him with a 1994 clip of him hosting and enthusiastically introducing Salt-N-Pepa, a moment that captures exactly why fans loved him. He was a Shakespearean-trained legend who moved effortlessly from Star Trek to X-Men, then turned around and stole scenes with pure comic timing. Marvel Studios, Hugh Jackman, and Famke Janssen were among those who paid tribute.

His final film, Doomsday, arrives in December, which feels especially poignant given what he told fans in July: he couldn’t imagine ever officially retiring.“I’ll always and forever be an actor,”he said. He meant every word. What role did Patrick Stewart play in your life? Tell us in the comments.
