Scarlett Johansson’s skincare brand The Outset is officially closing up shop. The company announced Monday, September 28 that it’s winding down operations four years after launching. Online shopping has already ended, though orders that were already placed will still be processed. The line, which included serums, lip balms, cleanser, moisturizer and masks, was sold at Sephora, Nordstrom and other retailers.
Johansson launched The Outset in 2021 with cofounder Kate Foster, calling it a longtime passion project inspired by her mother’s focus on self care. Foster stepped down from the brand back in April 2025. Since the announcement, loyal customers have flooded the brand’s Instagram comments with frustration, many asking what happens now to their recurring subscriptions and where they’re supposed to find replacements.
It’s a familiar story in the celebrity beauty world: big launch, devoted fanbase, sudden goodbye. And with The Outset’s closure, plenty of shoppers are left wondering which star-backed brands will survive the long haul and how to protect themselves from subscription surprises.
