NBC host Sara Gore is sharing the part of her cancer journey that cameras never captured. The“New York Live”and“Open House”star, 50, revealed her breast cancer diagnosis on air in April, underwent a double mastectomy later that month, and is now cancer-free after reconstruction surgery in September. But in a new interview with People, Gore admitted she sank into a deep depression after the procedure, describing severe nerve pain and limited mobility.
She said the surgery was a“godsend”because doctors caught the cancer early and confirmed it hadn’t spread. Still, she described hitting a low while continuing to appear on television before her diagnosis was public. With both her mother and sister having faced breast cancer, Gore had been screened every six months, and she’s now leaning into advocacy.
Her biggest motivation: her 9-year-old daughter Fiona Rose, who asked whether she would get breast cancer too. Gore says that question broke her heart and pushed her to raise awareness about the one-in-eight statistic. Have you or someone you love navigated the emotional side of a cancer diagnosis?
