Ryan Gosling is dusting off his spookiest side project. He and Zach Shields announced Thursday that Dead Man’s Bones is returning with new music on October 27, the duo’s first release in 17 years. The announcement arrived via a teaser video packed with ominous spoken-word poetry and a girl’s voice announcing the date, and ANTI- Records shared it too.

If the name doesn’t ring a bell, here’s the backstory: the band’s self-titled debut dropped in 2009 and was recorded with the Silverlake Conservatory’s Children’s Choir. It built a devoted cult following for its eerie, theatrical sound, and it’s the reason Gosling’s musical résumé goes far beyond“I’m Just Ken.”This time around, Eva Mendes has been building anticipation on her own feed, sharing old horror footage and ghostly clips set to the band’s music before reposting the teaser.

With a release date just days before Halloween, the timing couldn’t be better for anyone building a spooky-season playlist. The teaser’s vibe suggests the duo is leaning all the way into the haunting atmosphere that made the first album a favorite.
