A London jury has convicted Russell Brand of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault involving four women, while clearing him of two rape charges and one attempted indecent assault count. The verdict came at Southwark Crown Court, where Brand had pleaded not guilty to every charge. His sentencing is scheduled for Monday, November 9.
So what does the sentence actually look like? Senior solicitor Kally Sahota told reporters her estimate, based on the convictions and public information, is“in the region of eight or nine years, although the final sentence is for the judge to decide.”UK rape sentencing guidelines range from four to 19 years, and under release rules Brand would likely serve around two-thirds of any term before being released on licence.
The verdict has also pushed the accountability conversation into the spotlight. Sarah Klein, a sexual abuse attorney and the first known survivor of Larry Nassar, said:“Celebrity is not immunity. Fame is not consent. And no amount of money, power or public adoration puts a man above the law.”Meanwhile, Metropolitan Police are investigating two additional rape allegations against Brand, meaning further developments are possible. Where do you land: is an estimated eight to nine years the right ballpark, or should the judge go further?
