Rubén Blades received the Billboard Icon Award at the 2026 Billboard Latin Music Awards on Thursday night in Miami, and the moment delivered everything fans hoped for. Gilberto Santa Rosa, his friend and fellow salsa great, presented the honor at the James L. Knight Center ceremony, which aired live on Telemundo and Peacock.
Blades didn’t use his speech to list his own accomplishments. Instead, he credited the collaborators, mentors and family members who supported him across more than five decades in music, saying“No one becomes an icon without help.”He also thanked Billboard for honoring“a Latin American from Panama.”It was a full-circle moment for an artist who helped redefine salsa with socially conscious storytelling and characters like the unforgettable Pedro Navaja.
The night wasn’t just a victory lap, either. Blades recently released País Portátil with Roberto Delgado&Orquesta, proving he’s still creating. Cristian Castro, Fuerza Regida and Rosalía were also honored during the ceremony, so the evening celebrated multiple generations of Latin music in one place. Which Rubén Blades song deserves a spot on your playlist tonight?
