So much for the royal surprise. Despite months of speculation about whether Prince William and Kate Middleton might make a transatlantic dash to New York for what’s shaping up to be the social event of the summer, the future King and Queen of England are staying home.
People confirmed on Tuesday, June 30, that the Prince of Wales and the Princess of Wales, both 44, will not be attending Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s wedding. It’s a bit of a letdown after William played coy about the whole thing back in May. During an appearance on Heart Breakfast, when asked if he’d received an invitation, he offered a cheeky“No comment”with a smile that fueled weeks of speculation that the royal couple might surprise everyone with a trip to what’s rumored to be a Madison Square Garden ceremony on Friday, July 3. He even added fuel to the fire by saying,“I’m hoping, and I’m sure there might be an invitation around, but we’ll see.”Turns out, we won’t.
The irony here is that William’s connection to Swift goes back over a decade. The two first met in 2013 at the Centrepoint Winter Whites Gala at Kensington Palace, where they ended up onstage with Jon Bon Jovi for an impromptu performance of“Livin’on a Prayer.”More recently, William celebrated his 42nd birthday in June 2024 by attending Swift’s Eras Tour at Wembley Stadium in London with his eldest children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. After the show, William and his kids hung out with both Swift and Kelce, 36. Swift even posted about it on Instagram with a group selfie and the caption,“Happy Bday M8! London shows are off to a splendid start.”
While William mentioned that his daughter, Princess Charlotte, 11, is“obsessed”with Swift—and their friendship clearly runs deep—royal duties apparently trump celebrity weddings. The wedding is scheduled for the Fourth of July weekend, and the couple has other commitments keeping them across the pond.
That said, the guest list will still be star-studded. Suki Waterhouse confirmed in May that she’ll be there to watch her longtime friend walk down the aisle. But the A-list crowd won’t include the royals, no matter how close William and Swift’s friendship might be. It’s a reminder that even the closest celebrity friendships have their limits when you’ve got a kingdom to run.
