Roni Size Plays World's Deepest Rave 1,375 Feet Underground in a Welsh Slate Mine

Roni Size just took“underground”literally. The drum and bass legend performed a set 1,375 feet below ground inside Cwmorthin Slate Mine in North Wales, billed as the world’s deepest rave. Reaching the chamber was a full expedition: ravers abseiled 30 metres, crossed ravines and waded through waist-deep water for roughly two hours before the music even started.

It wasn’t just a stunt. The event, staged with G-Shock to launch the GDG-B100 Mudman watch, doubled as a sound experiment. Transducers pumped Size’s set into the slate while geophones and hydrophones captured vibrations through rock, water and mud, feeding them back into the mix. DJ Nav warmed up the crowd, the Welsh national anthem played, and five attendees won their places through a public ballot. Go Below Underground Adventures helped pull the whole thing together in just six weeks.

Size summed it up best:“It’s the most underground of underground raves ever.”A Mercury Prize winner, a record-setting venue and genuine science, all in one night. Would you abseil into a mine for a rave? Tell us in the comments.
