Rent-A-Mom Is the New College Trend: What $2,495 a Semester Gets Your Student

College care packages just got a serious upgrade.“Rent-A-Mom”services are expanding in college towns, with local moms offering laundry, home-cooked meals, birthday deliveries and sick-day check-ins for students far from home. Carrie Eckhardt, the“Bama Mama”near the University of Alabama, sells packages ranging from $1,295 to $2,495 per semester, while Mindy Horwitz’s“Mindy Knows”has built a network of proxy moms across eight campuses including Penn State and Wisconsin.

The founders say they’re filling a real gap. With UnitedHealthcare data showing 69% of college students reported a mental or behavioral health concern in the past year, parents want a local set of eyes and a warm meal on standby. Their pitch is simple:“Independence doesn’t mean being alone.”That framing hasn’t stopped the internet from debating whether this is a genuine support system or helicopter parenting with a receipt.

Costs vary, and so do the packages, from full concierge care to lighter help like prescription drop-offs and restaurant recs. Either way, it’s a window into how Gen Z and their parents are rethinking the launch into adulthood. So we have to ask: would you pay for a proxy mom, or is this where you’d draw the line?
