Reflecting Pool Fiasco: Trump Blames Box Cutter Vandals, Not $16 Million Contractor

When Donald Trump promised to drain the swamp, the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool probably wasn’t on the agenda—but here we are. The massive liner at the nation’s iconic monument has developed a sizable gash, and the President is pointing squarely at vandals armed with box cutters rather than the contractor responsible for a $16 million renovation project.

The damage is significant enough that draining the entire 6.5 million gallons of water may be necessary to make repairs. Trump has steadfastly refused to place blame on the contractor who completed the work, instead maintaining that the vandals—somehow equipped with precision cutting tools—are entirely responsible for the disaster. The optics are, well, awkward.

What’s raising eyebrows, though, is the disconnect between Trump’s vandalism narrative and the actual arrests happening at the site. Authorities have been rounding up people in the area in increasing numbers, including an ex-Olympian. But the alleged offenders don’t exactly fit the profile of organized box cutter-wielding saboteurs. One woman was cited Monday simply for dipping her hand into the murky, algae-filled water. Another man was arrested for yelling at police. These hardly seem like the calculated criminals behind a multi-million-dollar pool disaster.

The heightened security presence—National Guard troops and U.S. Marshals stationed around the landmark since the weekend—underscores how serious the situation has become. Whether the problem stems from faulty contractor work, environmental degradation, or actual vandalism remains the central question nobody seems eager to definitively answer. What’s certain is that one of America’s most recognizable monuments is currently a green, damaged mess, and the blame game is in full swing.
