Mackayla“Kash”Paige, the 29-year-old reality star known for her appearances on Now That’s TV’s Real West Coast Baddies, Young&Reckless and RoomHates, was killed early Sunday morning outside a nightclub on 14th Street in downtown Oakland. According to police, a verbal argument between Paige and another woman turned physical, and her sister, Vernika Dunbar, grabbed a firearm from someone in their group and tried to strike the other woman with it. The gun discharged, and Paige was hit instead. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Dunbar was arrested about an hour later and charged with involuntary manslaughter, assault with a firearm and weapons offenses. Officials say surveillance footage and Dunbar’s own statement to police supported her account of what happened. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office filed the charges, and the Oakland Police Department’s Homicide Section is investigating.
Paige’s family remembered her as someone with big dreams who wanted to build a better life for herself, and a cousin said that if you were a fan, she appreciated you and all she wanted to do was make people happy. The network called her part of its entertainment family. The case raises painful questions about grief, family loyalty and gun safety, and you can expect a lot more conversation as details develop.
