Prince William Steps Up as King Charles's Stand-In, Welcomes Sultan of Oman for Historic State Visit

Prince William took center stage on Tuesday, greeting the Sultan of Oman in London on behalf of King Charles. From there, the group headed to Windsor, where Charles and Queen Camilla hosted the full official welcome, complete with a royal salute in Windsor’s Home Park and a horse-drawn carriage procession to Windsor Castle. Kate joined the day’s events, and a state banquet with Prime Minister Andy Burnham is expected to round out the visit.

The ceremony is historic for more than one reason. This marks the first Omani state visit to the UK since 1982, when Queen Elizabeth hosted Sultan Qaboos. That visit famously included a bomb scare near Clarence House that turned out to be a false alarm. This time, everything appears to be running exactly as planned.

Beyond the pageantry, the visit highlights the royal family’s shifting workload. Charles, diagnosed with cancer in 2024, has been delegating more prominent duties to William and Kate, and William’s visible comfort in this diplomatic role has people talking about what comes next for the monarchy. What do you think: is William ready for the top job, or is he still learning the ropes?
