Those boots with the toes that curl upward aren’t just a throwback. They’re a full-on fashion moment, and the story behind them starts in Monterrey, Mexico. Tribal guarachero was a youth movement where kids competed to create the most exaggerated DIY boots using plastic hosing, foam, leather, glitter, and LED lights. VICE’s 2011 documentary Mexican Pointy Boots introduced the style to the world, and 3BallMTY’s“Inténtalo”hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart in 2012. The trio also took home best new artist at the Latin Grammys.

Fast forward to now. Rosalía posted an Instagram photo in late August wearing white leather boots with elongated, upward-curving toes and“La Rosalía”stamped on the sides. Caín Culto wore knee-high brown cowboy boots with extreme points on the cover of his debut album, CULTO, in September. Neither artist makes tribal guarachero, which shows just how far the style has traveled beyond its origins.

The revival is global this time. Tribal parties are popping up in Paris, and experimental compilations like TRIBAL 2025 are pushing the sound into new territory. As 3BallMTY puts it, every ten years things come back around. The boots walked so the rest of fashion could run. Would you wear a pair?
