Pete Davidson is opening up about his mental health in a way few stars ever do. In a new Variety profile, the 32-year-old comedian revealed that he used to cut and that some of his many tattoos were specifically there to cover the scars. He also shared that he’s been self-harming since childhood, including banging his head against walls, and that the urges have eased over the past year.

What helped? Therapy, plus the DBT Workbook, which teaches dialectical behavioral therapy skills. Davidson says he still works through black-and-white thinking, that all-or-nothing trap so many of us know, and he swears by simple coping moves like taking a cold shower or calling a friend. His reasoning: the urge usually passes in 15 to 20 minutes. He’s also in the middle of laser tattoo removal, wiping the slate mostly clean, with one very on-brand exception, his Hillary Clinton tattoo.

If you or someone you know is struggling with self-harm or suicidal thoughts, you don’t have to handle it alone. Reach out to a trusted person or a crisis line, because the hardest moments really do pass, even when it doesn’t feel like it. What’s one small thing that helps you get through a rough day?
