Night City is officially getting the Hollywood treatment. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action Cyberpunk 2077 movie, with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura teaming up with game developer CD Projekt Red. The game’s world is a neon-drenched dystopia where mercenary V navigates corporate warfare while carrying the digital ghost of rocker-turned-terrorist Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves. Idris Elba also joined the universe for the Phantom Liberty expansion.
Here’s why this matters: Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 as one of the most infamous buggy releases in gaming history, then pulled off one of the greatest comebacks ever. It has now sold more than 40 million copies. The franchise keeps expanding too, with Netflix’s Cyberpunk: Edgerunners returning for Season 2 later this month and a sequel game, Cyberpunk 2, already in development.
A live-action movie could bring Night City to people who never touched the game, which is exactly what Paramount seems to be betting on. The biggest question hanging over everything: will Keanu Reeves return as Johnny Silverhand? He’s the heart of the story, and fans already can’t imagine it without him.
Would you watch a Cyberpunk 2077 movie without Keanu? Tell us in the comments.
