Oklahoma State’s football team is 3-1 and ranked No. 19 in the AP Poll, the program’s first appearance since 2024. Off the field, multiple outlets are reporting that the university could replace athletic director Chad Weiberg within weeks. Regents chair Joe D. Hall is reportedly pushing to bring in West Virginia AD Wren Baker, an OSU graduate, and mega-donor Ross McKnight is also said to be seeking a change at the top of the department.
Weiberg was hired as athletic director in 2021 at $750,000 a year. He worked under an expired contract through 2025 before regents approved an extension last October tied to balancing the athletics budget. His contract allows President Jim Hess to terminate him at any time without cause, owing one year of total annual compensation. One source close to the regents says there’s a chance the university keeps both men, and notes the board has received calls and emails in support of Weiberg.
The Board of Regents is scheduled to meet Oct. 23 at the OSU Institute of Technology in Okmulgee. For Lawton-area families who follow the Cowboys, the decision touches everything from donor relationships to the department’s overall direction. What matters most to you, the win-loss record or the leadership running the department?
