Olivia Rodrigo's Dress Dissolved Onstage at the Unraveled Tour Opener, and the Reveal Was a Red Bodysuit

Olivia Rodrigo opened the Unraveled Tour in Hartford, Connecticut on Friday, and the first night already delivered the image of the year. Midway through“the cure,”artificial rain started falling and her white sleeveless dress began to break apart onstage, dissolving piece by piece to reveal a red corset bodysuit and micro miniskirt underneath. The effect was engineered to match the lyric“I’m unraveled”and the tour’s name, and yes, fans caught every second of it.

That dress was custom work from designer Hussein Chalayan, who reportedly spent six months developing the water-reactive technique behind it. The concept draws on his Spring 2016 collection, where dissolving garments were first explored. Producing that kind of effect live, night after night, gives the Unraveled Tour a theatrical edge beyond the setlist, and the show leans into it with seasonal chapters running Spring through Winter, six distinct looks, and five costume changes.

For Rodrigo, the moment lands with more weight than a flashy costume reveal. She once said she found the widespread criticism of her babydoll dresses“really disturbing,”explaining that she didn’t feel sexy in those looks at all and instead felt like Kathleen Hanna or Courtney Love. A reveal she controls and designed into her own show tells a very different story. The tour continues through February 2027, closing with ten shows at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
