Olivia Rodrigo is not staying quiet about the Cornell lawsuit. On Oct. 4, she posted an Instagram Story saying“Shame on Cornell and on every institution who protects rapists and abusers over women,”adding,“I stand with Jane Doe. Her bravery reverberates across the country and the crimes against her will not go unpunished.”

The lawsuit, filed in September, accuses seven Chi Phi fraternity members of drugging and gang raping a then-20-year-old woman in October 2024. It also claims Cornell mishandled its Title IX response when she first reported. Cornell disputes the idea that punishments were light, pointing to two expulsions, two suspensions, one member barred from campus, and the Chi Phi chapter banned from campus entirely. Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff said the school“must do better”and welcomed an independent investigation, and New York Attorney General Letitia James is now serving as special prosecutor in the criminal case.

What makes this moment matter beyond the headlines is the pressure it puts on every school’s Title IX process. A pop star with tens of millions of young followers just moved a survivor’s story to the center of the national feed, and that attention tends to force uncomfortable questions about how institutions respond when someone comes forward.
