Olivia Rodrigo made it very clear she belongs to the emo generation. The pop star shared Instagram Story footage of herself at a My Chemical Romance tour stop on the band’s Long Live the Black Parade run, where MCR is performing their 2006 album The Black Parade in full, and she kept the caption to just“@mychemicalromance.”Simple. Devoted. Undeniable.
The timing makes this story even better. The Billboard 200 for the week of Nov. 6 is shaping up as a real race between Rodrigo’s You Seem Pretty Sad For a Girl So In Love, which just returned to No. 1 thanks to a Chappell Roan remix of“Expectations,”and MCR’s Black Parade 20th-anniversary expanded edition, which landed Oct. 23 with six bonus tracks and two live songs. Rodrigo already has three nonconsecutive weeks on top; MCR has never had a No. 1 album, with The Black Parade topping out at No. 2 back in 2006.
For Rodrigo, another week at No. 1 would mark her second-longest reign on the chart. For My Chemical Romance, it would be a career first, twenty years in the making. Either way, next week’s Billboard 200 is must-see for anyone who grew up screaming along to“Welcome to the Black Parade”or streaming“Expectations”on repeat.
Which side are you on: the pop star or the emo legends?
