Olivia Rodrigo has been sitting on a secret since May, and it just came out in a new Hollywood Reporter interview. She’s the winning bidder who paid $25,600 for the white Gunne Sax dress Meg White wore on the cover of The White Stripes’2003 albumElephant. The dress went up for auction at Julien’s Auctions with an estimate of $4,000 to $6,000. Olivia more than quadrupled it.
She’s the first to admit it was a lot. In the interview, she described the price as an“exorbitant amount of money.”The original plan was to wear the dress onstage at her Daisy Chain Fields festival in August, but she scrapped the idea because of the heat. Her words: it was“too fucking hot.”She even floated moving the festival to winter so the dress can finally get its moment in the spotlight.
The purchase makes sense when you look at Olivia’s history with the band. She’s called Jack White a mentor and named“Seven Nation Army”the most iconic song of all time. Last year, she performed“We’re Going To Be Friends”with Feist at The White Stripes’Rock Hall induction. So $25,600 wasn’t an impulse buy. It was a superfan closing the loop on a band that shaped her sound.
Would you drop $25,600 on a piece of music history if you had the money? Sound off in the comments.
