An Oklahoma chiropractor will spend 14 years in federal prison after a jury found him guilty of running a three-year healthcare fraud scheme that billed Medicare, TRICARE and CHAMPVA more than $30 million. Dr. Mark Loftis, 39, of Cushing, was sentenced Thursday in Florida. Prosecutors said he and his co-conspirators shipped orthotic braces, glucose monitors and other equipment to patients who never needed it, then collected on the claims.

Court evidence showed Loftis hid his ownership of a Drumright-based medical equipment company, paid more than $1 million in illegal kickbacks, and purchased sham doctors’orders from telemedicine providers who never examined patients. More than $8 million in claims were paid and routed through his bank accounts. After a 12-day trial in July, he was convicted of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud. Along with the prison term, he was ordered to pay over $8 million in restitution and forfeit more than $560,000. Investigators also found he diverted $133,715 in Provider Relief Fund money in 2020, funds meant to help providers weather the pandemic.

For the Lawton area, the case carries extra weight. TRICARE and CHAMPVA serve thousands of military families connected to Fort Sill, and fraud against those programs means real dollars pulled away from real care. Several co-conspirators have already been sentenced in the case. Have you ever received medical equipment you never ordered? We want to hear your story.
