Oklahoma’s aerospace and aeronautics industry now delivers $52.5 billion in annual economic impact, according to a new report from the Oklahoma Department of Aerospace and Aeronautics. Military aviation is the largest piece of that pie at $21.8 billion, supporting 133,296 jobs and $7.3 billion in payroll across the state. For Lawton, that number has a familiar face: Fort Sill and the thousands of military and civilian workers who keep southwest Oklahoma running.

The report breaks the rest down into sectors that touch our daily lives more than most of us realize. The state’s 107 public-use airports generate $13.8 billion and support 64,878 jobs. Off-airport aerospace and defense firms add $16.8 billion and 61,109 jobs. Air cargo moves 50,000 tons through Oklahoma airports every year for another $6.7 billion, a figure that isn’t even counted in the headline $52.5 billion total.

Looking ahead, Oklahoma is positioning itself as a leader in unmanned aircraft systems, with the Infinity One Oklahoma Spaceport in Burns Flat anchoring the emerging Oklahoma Space Triangle that links Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Burns Flat. That means growing demand for the exact skills our neighbors already build at Fort Sill and around the region: maintenance, logistics, engineering, and drone operations. What career path would you point a Lawton high schooler toward today?
