Ocarina of Time Remake Reviews Are In: Superb, But Is It Too Safe?

Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake arrives Thursday on the Switch 2, and the early reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Critics are calling it superb and painstakingly detailed, with modern controls, a quick item menu, and a Water Temple that no longer makes grown adults cry. There’s even a new Threads of Time quest log for anyone who gets stuck.

But not everyone is fully sold. The main critique is that this remake represents the safest of safe bets, a lavish tribute that can never eclipse the memory of the 1998 original. Some of the new animations tip into uncanny valley, Mido got rewritten as an overbearing boss, and Navi’s iconic chime is quieter now. Great Fairy upgrades also cost up to 500 rupees, which feels like a lot for fairy dust.

The bigger picture: this all lands ahead of a Zelda movie next year, and it signals Nintendo leaning hard on the classics. For a generation that grew up in Hyrule, that’s either a warm hug or a missed chance to innovate. Which side are you on?
