Nirvana was honored with the Video Vanguard Award at the 2026 MTV VMAs on Sunday night at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear accepted the award after a montage of the band’s career footage played for the crowd. It marks the first time a rock band has won the honor since Duran Duran in 2003, a 23-year gap that says plenty about how the genre’s relationship with MTV has shifted.
The timing could not have been better. Nevermind, the 1991 album that knocked Michael Jackson’s Dangerous from No. 1 and pushed alternative rock into the mainstream, just marked its 35th anniversary on September 24. Novoselic used his time at the podium to credit Kurt Cobain’s vision for the band’s videos and said Nirvana endures because people still want authenticity, something real and uncompromising, something that tells you it’s ok to come as you are.
Nirvana’s run was short. Cobain died in April 1994 at age 27, and the band disbanded soon after. But the group already had five VMAs to its name, including Best New Artist in a Video for“Smells Like Teen Spirit”in 1992, and the songs never left rotation.
