Nick Reiner was back in a Los Angeles courtroom on Wednesday, October 21, for a pretrial conference in the murder case tied to the deaths of his parents, director Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner. The 33-year-old appeared in a brown jail uniform with shackles on both wrists, showing little emotion as the hearing moved forward. He has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.

The central issue this week: whether grand jury transcripts should be unsealed. Judge Sam Ohta gave the defense a window of December 14 through 18 to file briefs explaining how releasing those transcripts would harm Nick’s right to a fair trial. The next hearing is set for January 13. Prosecutors confirmed earlier that they will not seek the death penalty, meaning life without parole is the maximum possible sentence if he’s convicted.

Money is also on the docket. A probate hearing on Friday, October 23, will address the status of a $1.5 million family trust fund that Nick has repeatedly asked the court to let him access. It adds a financial layer to an already complex case that has drawn national attention.

What do you think: should grand jury transcripts be made public in high-profile cases, or sealed to protect fairness? Drop your take below.
