Disney+ and Hulu have ordered a new Glee series from co-creator Ryan Murphy, announced October 21. The original ran six seasons on Fox from 2009 to 2015, and the revival news has everyone relitigating their favorite covers all over again.
Here’s why that nostalgia is earned. The Glee cast holds the record for most Billboard Hot 100 entries among non-soloists with 207, behind only Drake, Taylor Swift and Future overall. In 2010 alone, the cast charted 80 songs on the Hot 100, the most by any artist in a single year, and passed Elvis Presley’s career total in February 2011. The catalog has sold 48.4 million downloads and drawn 4.5 billion official U.S. streams, with three No. 1 albums among 14 top 10s on the Billboard 200 and 8.2 million U.S. album sales.
The live side was just as big. The cast grossed $45.9 million and sold 558,000 tickets across 53 reported shows in 2010-11. As Geoff Bywater, former head of 20th Century Fox Television’s music department, put it at the time: if all works well, they’d see records in the top 10 and sell albums. They did, and then some. So what does a Murphy revival need to do to match that legacy? Which Glee cover would you want to hear first in a new series?
