Nene Royal is officially the winner of America’s Got Talent season 21. The 16-year-old singer and guitarist from Phuket, Thailand, took the title during the Sept. 23 results show, beating finalist Geno Ploeger and claiming the $1 million prize. She started playing guitar at just seven years old, is entirely self-taught, and also plays piano, bass, and drums.
Royal said she was completely shocked when her name was called and described the win as surreal. In an interview after the show, she made her intentions clear: rock and metal are the destination. Her influences include System of a Down, Linkin Park, and The Warning, and she’s already planning original songs or an EP, international touring, and future collaborations with the artists who inspired her.
Her win also marks a meaningful moment for Asian representation on a major American talent stage. Royal said she hopes to inspire other young musicians to believe that no matter where they come from, their music can reach people all around the world. With a million dollars and a clear vision, she says this is just the beginning.
