Nathan Fielder's The Rehearsal Explored Pilot Mental Health. Now the Senate Passed Two Bills About It

The Senate unanimously passed two bipartisan bills Thursday aimed at improving mental health care and medication guidance for pilots, air traffic controllers and other aviation workers. The John A. Hauser Mental Health in Aviation Act pushes the FAA to modernize its mental health certification process, while the Aviation Medication Transparency Act requires clearer public guidance on which medications affect medical certification. Both still need to pass the House.

Sound familiar? Season 2 of The Rehearsal found Nathan Fielder investigating the same FAA certification barriers and the stigma that keeps pilots from disclosing mental health concerns out of fear for their careers. Fielder said former NTSB member John Goglia told him younger congressional staffers had watched the show and believed it pushed them to act. Fielder, ever cautious, wouldn’t take the credit:“I don’t know if it did anything, but it was nice to hear.”

It’s important to note the legislation predates the HBO series, and Senate passage doesn’t establish that the show caused anything. But it’s a rare moment where a comedy series and a real policy fight occupy the exact same space, affecting thousands of aviation workers whose careers depend on rules that were often confusing at best.
