Nashville International Airport could soon carry the name of the city’s biggest star. On Friday, the Metro Nashville Airport Authority voted unanimously to begin the process of renaming the airport in honor of Dolly Parton, following a fan-led petition that collected more than 175,000 signatures after her death on August 25th at age 80.
No final name has been decided, and one hurdle remains: airport policy requires honorees to have been deceased for at least two years, meaning the board would need to approve an exception. If the renaming moves forward, it would become the first U.S. international commercial airport named after a woman. Governor Bill Lee, Mayor Freddie O’Connell and the Metro City Council have all voiced support.
