Netflix’s Narnia plans just hit a fan-led roadblock. A Change.org petition asking the streamer to replace director Greta Gerwig has passed 8,200 signatures, started by Chaz Migliacci, who runs a Narnia fan community of more than 81,000 members.

The petition points to reports that Meryl Streep will voice Aslan, the lion C.S. Lewis wrote as a Christ figure, and that the story’s setting is moving from the 1900s to the 1950s. Migliacci says the changes amount to“a subversion of the Christian faith, and a subversion of Lewis’intentions,”and wants Netflix to find a director“more akin to C.S. Lewis’heart.”Gerwig is adapting“The Magician’s Nephew,”the prequel that opens the whole series.

So the debate is on: is this a fan community protecting a beloved author, or a petition trying to run a director’s chair by popular vote? Gerwig has serious critical cred, and Netflix clearly believes in her vision. Would you sign the petition?
