MUNA is kicking off their“Gets So Hot”North American tour this week, but one member won’t be on stage for the first shows. Naomi McPherson, the band’s guitarist, synth player, and vocalist, is staying home to care for their mother, Harriet, who has terminal cancer. The band shared that her passing is expected to coincide with the start of the tour, and Naomi will remain behind to handle affairs after.
The shows are still happening, just as Naomi wanted. Lou Roy is filling in for the opening dates in Phoenix, Dallas, Austin, Nashville, and Atlanta, while Naomi is expected to return for the Philadelphia show on September 25. Hemlocke Springs is providing support on the US dates, with UK and European shows following in November. The tour supports MUNA’s fourth album,“Dancing On The Wall,”the follow-up to their 2022 self-titled record.
In their statement, the band said that when Naomi returns, they’ll do so knowing that watching them play music is what filled Harriet with the most joy and pride. It’s a reminder that behind every tour poster and album drop are real people navigating real life. If you’re heading to one of these shows, you’re part of something bigger than a concert.
