The Britney Spears biopic has been in the works since 2023, but the casting conversation just got a lot more interesting. Mikey Madison, who took home an Oscar for her role in“Anora,”was asked at The Social Reckoning’s U.K. premiere whether she’d step into Britney’s shoes. Her response?“Incredibly flattering.”But also, maybe not her job.

Madison made it clear she’s a lifelong Britney fan, saying“Britney is my everything.”Then she explained why she thinks the part belongs to a newcomer:“For her you need someone completely unknown, someone completely fresh that you can just pluck and mold into her.”It’s a take that’s already splitting the internet, with some fans agreeing that a fresh face keeps the focus on Britney and others arguing that a biopic of this size needs a proven star.

Director Jon M. Chu isn’t weighing in on the debate just yet, telling reporters he’s“not even thinking about casting right now”because the team is focused on getting the story right. The film adapts Britney’s 2023 memoir“The Woman in Me,”with Liz Meriweather writing the script and Marc Platt producing.
