Sam Fender’s cover of The Rolling Stones’“You Can’t Always Get What You Want”is officially Jagger-approved. The track, recorded for the John Lewis Christmas advert starring Kristin Scott Thomas, got a shoutout from Mick Jagger himself, who said he’s a fan of Sam’s work and thinks he did a great job with it. If you needed a sign to give it a listen, this is it.

The recording is a proper hometown affair. It was made in Tyneside and features a children’s choir from Sam’s former school, John Spence Community High School in North Shields, along with brass from the Easington Colliery Band. Sam called it a privilege to rework such an iconic song by such a legendary band. The single is out on Polydor Records, with a 7-inch and CD available and 100% of net proceeds going to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Fender is also gearing up for his Proper Massive stadium tour across the U.K. and Ireland, including three dates at Wembley Stadium. Which cover song do you think deserves a legend’s stamp of approval? Let us know!
