Michelle Zauner is back with another memoir, and if you loved“Crying in H Mart,”this one’s going straight to the top of your list. The Japanese Breakfast frontwoman just announced“Thank You for Your Suffering,”a 224-page book hitting shelves April 27 via Knopf. It covers the year she spent in South Korea, where she attended a seriously demanding language school and reconnected with her late mother’s family. The whole reason she wanted to learn Korean? So she could read her mother’s diary. That alone tells you everything about the emotional weight of this project.
Zauner opened up about the experience, saying,“So much of the book is about working really hard. I was just so hungry and scared of not doing a good job.”She also reflected on how her earlier writing about Korean food felt incomplete, adding,“It felt like I spent all this time learning about Korean food and writing about that, and it just wasn’t enough.”It’s that honesty that made“Crying in H Mart”a New York Times best-seller and a cultural touchstone for so many readers.
In the meantime, the“Crying in H Mart”film adaptation remains on pause, Japanese Breakfast released“For Melancholy Brunettes (&Sad Women)”in March 2025, and Zauner revealed she was pregnant during her Governor’s Ball set this year. She’s balancing a lot, and somehow still delivering. Are you pre-ordering“Thank You for Your Suffering,”or waiting until release day? Let us know.
