Michael J. Fox is back on your screen, and this time it’s personal in the best way. In Apple TV+’s“Shrinking,”he plays Gerry, a character who also lives with Parkinson’s. That means Fox doesn’t have to act around his diagnosis. He gets to bring himself to set, channel whatever he’s feeling into each scene, and he told People it was“insanely fun.”
The road back wasn’t simple. Fox stepped away from acting in 2000 and again in 2020, when he lost the ability to memorize lines. He’s been candid that the era of long production days is over for him. But“Shrinking”built a role that worked with his reality instead of ignoring it, and the payoff was an Emmy nomination and a whole lot of joy.
Fox, now 65, hasn’t ruled out future roles, but his biggest project remains the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which he founded in 2000. His outlook: the science is showing we’re getting closer to a world without Parkinson’s.
