For four decades, Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner told the world the same story about the set of“Romancing the Stone”: the chemistry was fun, but nothing ever happened. In his new memoir“One Helluva Ride,”Douglas, 82, admits that was a lie. The two became lovers in 1984 while Douglas was separated from then-wife Diandra Luker, and the romance stayed hidden from co-star Danny DeVito, director Robert Zemeckis, and basically everyone else.
The affair ended when Luker and the couple’s young son Cameron visited the Mexico set, and Luker confronted Turner directly. Douglas returned to Luker for Cameron’s sake, though the marriage ended in divorce in 1995. He and Turner kept the official denial going to protect Luker and Cameron, even as they reunited on screen in“The Jewel of the Nile,”“War of the Roses,”and, years later,“The Kominsky Method.”Turner has hinted at the chemistry over the years, but this is the first time either of them has said it plain.
The memoir,“One Helluva Ride,”hits shelves Tuesday. Douglas went on to marry Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, and Turner was married to Jay Weiss from 1984 to 2007. If you rewatch their movies now, just know every charged look was doing overtime. Which on-screen duo’s chemistry did you always suspect was actually real?
