The Medicine Park Economic Development Authority has lost the numbers it needs to operate. The five-member board is down to two after Candace McCoy resigned earlier this year and both Mayor Rich Amadon and Katrina Janz stepped down Monday. Chairman Matt Latham and member Noel Alsbrook are the only ones left, and three members are required to conduct official business. Thursday’s special session ended after just a few minutes because no quorum was present.
Amadon said he resigned to avoid a conflict of interest between his responsibilities as mayor and his votes on the authority. Latham said he trusts community members to step forward and fill the vacancies, though it remains unclear whether the Board of Trustees will make those appointments or when. Until then, the authority cannot approve projects, take votes, or move economic development decisions forward.
For a town that depends on tourism, small business, and its spot at the gateway to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, a stalled development board means growth conversations pause. If you live in Medicine Park, would you consider applying for one of the open seats? Let us know in the comments.
