Matthew Rhys didn’t just have a good night at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday, September 14. He had a historic one. Rhys won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, then followed it up with Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for Widow’s Bay, making him the first male actor ever to win two Lead Actor categories in a single evening.

The comedy win came against a field of Emmy veterans: Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Steve Carell, Jason Segel, and Martin Short. In his acceptance speech, Rhys thanked Widow’s Bay creator Katie Dippold, joking that the award was“purely for the depraved and twisted mind”of hers, and gave a heartfelt shout-out to his first agent, Dallas Smith. He also celebrated his Welsh roots, calling Wales“a small but mighty nation.”

It’s Rhys’s second career Emmy, following his 2018 win for The Americans. And with history now attached to Widow’s Bay, the show’s future just got a whole lot more interesting. So tell us: are you finally pressing play on Widow’s Bay this week?
