Netflix’s new three-part documentary“The One with Matthew Perry”premieres October 27, and while it promises an intimate look at the late actor’s life, it will do so without the five people who shared six seasons of television history with him. Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer were all approached to participate. All five declined.
According to Page Six, Aniston’s decision came down to the emotional weight of it all. Sources say reliving Perry’s death on camera was too painful, and she wasn’t willing to grieve publicly in front of a film crew. Instead, the documentary, directed by Mary Robertson, features Perry’s sister Mia Perry Bowick speaking about her brother for the first time, along with friends and colleagues from outside the“Friends”bubble.
The premiere date lands near the third anniversary of Perry’s death in October 2023, and with five people, including his assistant and two doctors, having been prosecuted in connection with the ketamine that killed him. It’s a heavy chapter, and it raises a real question about who gets to tell a famous person’s story after they’re gone.
Would you watch a documentary about a celebrity you loved if their closest family and friends refused to take part? Sound off in the comments.
