Madonna just proved that a two-decade gap between albums is no obstacle when the vision is right. Confessions II, her sequel to 2005’s Confessions on a Dance Floor, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned her the strongest reviews she’s seen in years. The project came together after Madonna and producer Stuart Price reunited for the Celebration Tour and found themselves back in the studio, quickly realizing a follow-up to their 2005 collaboration was taking shape.

The guest list reads like a genre-spanning playlist all on its own: Sabrina Carpenter, Feid, Martin Garrix, Stromae and Madonna’s daughter Lola Leon all appear on the record. Meanwhile, Andrew Watt co-wrote and co-produced“Danceteria,”a track inspired by Madonna’s early New York City club days. Price described the album’s mission as dance music built for confrontation and self-reclamation. As he put it,“It wasn’t about going backwards. It was about discovering new territory.”

Watt added his own praise for the icon, saying,“She wrote the book on being a pop star. She is one of the greatest producers and songwriters of all time.”For longtime fans and new listeners alike, Confessions II offers a rare look at how a legacy artist stays current without losing what made her iconic in the first place. Which track off Confessions II are you playing on repeat? Let us know in the comments.
