Madonna and Charli XCX Team Up on "Danceteria Afterhours" and It's a Full-Circle Pop Moment

Madonna and Charli XCX have officially released“Danceteria Afterhours,”a reworked version of“Danceteria”from Madonna’s chart-topping album Confessions II. The track is named after the legendary New York nightclub where Madonna spent time early in her career, and it’s packed with nostalgic references to Fab 5 Freddy, Jean-Michel Basquiat and the Rock Steady Crew. Charli’s verse brings her own club history into the mix, from London to Los Angeles with A.G. Cook and the late SOPHIE. Production credits include Madonna, Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price.

The collaboration didn’t come out of nowhere. It started with Charli’s“the dancefloor is dead”comment, followed by Madonna’s now-famous response:“If your Dance floor feels dead, maybe you’re playing the wrong music.”What could have been a feud turned into a Paris hangout and now a full-blown musical partnership. Charli described Madonna as“so cool”and“so interested in really talking about the music that she makes,”calling the experience“very inspiring.”

With Madonna set to return to the MTV VMAs stage for the first time in 23 years and Charli out on tour, the timing is perfect for this generational pop crossover. Two eras of club culture, one track, and plenty of history to celebrate.
