Grief doesn’t follow a schedule, and neither does love. On Friday, May 8, Erika Kirk took to X to mark what would have been her fifth wedding anniversary with her late husband Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, who was assassinated in September 2025 while speaking at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah. He was 31.

In her tribute, the 37-year-old didn’t shy away from the weight of the moment. She shared a video of favorite memories with Charlie and wrote a message that reaches beyond the immediate pain:“Even though our kids won’t see our love‘grow old together’from an earthly stand point; they’ll see it from a Heavenly one. And I’ll tell them of our love story any moment I can.”It’s the kind of statement that speaks to how Erika has chosen to navigate her loss—not by erasing it, but by transforming it into something intentional to pass down.

The timing carries extra resonance because just last May, at their fourth anniversary, Charlie had publicly celebrated their union on X:“Today marks 4 years of being married to @MrsErikaKirk. Second to following Jesus, it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. She is bold, smart, loyal, and beautiful.”Those words, now reposted by Erika, read differently now—a snapshot of a life cut far too short.

Since his death, Erika hasn’t retreated. She stepped into the role of CEO and chairperson of Turning Point USA, a responsibility she’s carried while raising their two young children and processing unimaginable grief. In an October 2025 Instagram post, she described the non-linear nature of loss with startling clarity:“One day you’re collapsed on the floor crying out the name Jesus in between labored breaths. The next you’re playing with your children in the living rooms surrounded by family photos, and feeling a rush of something you can only attempt to define as divinely planted and bittersweet joy.”She added a line that cuts to the heart of what she’s discovered:“It’s humbling to realize that this magnitude of suffering didn’t steal my love for my husband. It amplified it. It crystallized it.”

A 22-year-old man was apprehended in connection with the shooting and charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, obstruction of justice, and witness tampering. He has yet to enter a plea.

This first anniversary without Charlie marks a milestone Erika will likely continue to honor in the years ahead—not as a date of despair, but as a day to remember the man she married and the love story they built together, however briefly.
