Nick Broderick and Eva were hiking Kettle Moraine State Forest in Wisconsin in August 2025 when storms rolled in. Seconds after Eva wondered aloud what would happen if they were struck by lightning, a tree beside them took a direct hit. Ground current knocked Nick unconscious and stopped his breathing.

With poor cell signal and no way to describe their location, Eva called 911 and began CPR, keeping Nick alive for 50 minutes until search and rescue arrived. She restarted his heart twice. After a three-day hospital stay, Nick proposed on discharge, and the couple married just short of a year after the strike.

The Palmyra Fire Department later presented Eva with a lifesaving award. Her take on the whole thing is unforgettable: he can’t leave her now, because she brought him back from death. Do you know CPR, or is it something you’ve been meaning to learn? Tell us in the comments.
