A two-hour standoff in Lawton ended peacefully Tuesday when 41-year-old Richard Von Atkinson Jr. surrendered to U.S. Marshals and Lawton Police. Authorities were serving an Oklahoma County arrest warrant charging Atkinson with felony conjoint robbery. Nobody was injured in the standoff, and Atkinson was taken into custody without further incident.
The charge traces back to August 16, when a Lyft driver told Oklahoma City police he picked up a woman from Remington Park Casino and drove her to an Executive Inn. According to court records detailed by The Lawton Constitution, the driver was beaten and robbed of $10,000 in cash, an iPhone 12, and his wallet. Investigators reviewed hotel surveillance video and identified three men in the robbery. Prosecutors say the woman, 31-year-old Anyssa Jean White, lured the victim to the room. Carlos Antonio Burris, 39, and Steven William Jones III, 38, are also charged, and Jones remains at large.
Court records show Atkinson has prior felony convictions, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and domestic abuse. The case is a reminder for anyone working rideshare or delivery shifts around Lawton and Fort Sill to stay alert and think twice about carrying large amounts of cash.
